Chapter 1: Call of the Night (Japanese: Yofukashi no Uta) is the first chapter of the first volume of Call of the Night.
Plot[]
Kou Yamori, a fourteen year old Komori School student, suffers from insomnia and decides to start skipping school. At night, Yamori sneaks out of his apartment to venture around the streets of Komori by himself. He acknowledges how amazing the night feels, almost as if he is the only person in the world, therefore, Yamori can be more carefree to do whatever he wants in his own night. While having fun by himself, Yamori ponders about his reputation as an honor student at his school, but his circumstances only seemed fine physically, since he actually trusts nobody.
One day, his classmate Sakura Asakura confessed to him, but Yamori turned her down politely, since he does not understand the nature of romance or crushes. Because of that, Asakura's friends, Michiko and Saki Fujiwara confronted Yamori and verbally harassed him for rejecting Asakura. Afterwards, he had became tired of his school life, thus he began skipping. Upon coming across a vending machine, Yamori considers trying to buy a beer, but suddenly, Nazuna Nanakusa approaches him somewhat menacingly. After Nanakusa assures Yamori she will not report him for attempted underage drinking, she offers to help him sleep.
While wandering around together, Nanakusa explains that night owls are not actually satisfied with their current life. Yamori is surprised by how Nanakusa can cheerfully greet strangers as if she knows them, and she responds that nightime is the time to act freely, therefore they can finally feel satisfied. After loosening up a little bit, Yamori considers Nanakusa as someone he can fall for, and she decides to bring him to her apartment building for him to sleep.
Upon arriving at Nanakusa's apartment, Yamori is told to lay down on the futon while the girl reveals her rather strange outfit. Yamori, despite finding Nanakusa's behavior odd, agrees to try and sleep on the futon, feeling calm enough to pretend to fall asleep. Believing the boy is truly unconscious, Nanakusa uses the opportunity to suck some of Yamori's blood by biting his neck, and much to her astonishment, his blood is really delicious.
